November 2014, Vladmir Putin is photographed draping a brown shawl around the shoulders of China’s first lady Peng Liyuan. It is filmed that she accepts it smiling, then seconds later hands it to an assistant. She retires with her dark purple velvet jacket as she sits next to Putin, they engage in conversation. Recorded, the sequence of events is negated in favour of a single frame that is duplicated en masse, circulated internationally and eventually censored in China. The context, build up and results are avoided: the sum of parts spliced and removed, and found to be worth vastly more than their total.
